Home is where we grow, connect, and discover purpose. It\u2019s where identity and belonging take root\u2014essentials for every individual in our community. Yet, for many in Greater Moncton, the idea of a safe and stable home remains out of reach.<\/p>\n<p class=\"\" data-start=\"584\" data-end=\"911\">In February 2025, <a href=\"https:\/\/sjhdc.ca\/nb-data-portal\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">the Human Development Council<\/a> reported that <strong>over 700 individuals<\/strong> <strong>in the region experienced homelessness for at least one day.<\/strong> More than 400 were chronically unhoused. <strong data-start=\"691\" data-end=\"724\">This is not an isolated issue<\/strong>. Homelessness affects healthcare systems, justice services, and long-term community well-being.<\/p>\n<p class=\"\" data-start=\"913\" data-end=\"1189\"><strong data-start=\"822\" data-end=\"836\">To respond<\/strong>, the <strong data-start=\"842\" data-end=\"867\">Pond-Deshpande Centre<\/strong> partnered with the <strong data-start=\"887\" data-end=\"906\">City of Moncton<\/strong>, the <strong data-start=\"912\" data-end=\"936\">Northpine Foundation<\/strong>, and the <strong data-start=\"946\" data-end=\"972\">UNB Faculty of Nursing<\/strong>. Together, they launched <a href=\"https:\/\/ponddeshpande.ca\/fr\/pdc-home-cloned\/moncton-housing-retention\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">the <strong data-start=\"1132\" data-end=\"1175\">Health and Housing Resilience Challenge<\/strong><\/a> in June 2024.<\/p>\n<p class=\"\" data-start=\"1190\" data-end=\"1547\"><span data-teams=\"true\">The Challenge aimed to explore housing insecurity through a healthcare lens, with the goal of better supporting individuals whose access to healthcare is impacted by homelessness, as they transition into stable housing. From June to December 2024, 24 people from healthcare, government, non-profits, and academia joined forces. They worked in three focus teams:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li class=\"\" data-start=\"1515\" data-end=\"1651\">\n<p class=\"\" data-start=\"1517\" data-end=\"1651\"><strong style=\"color: var(--awb-color3);\" data-start=\"1517\" data-end=\"1546\">Team 1: Addressing Stigma<\/strong> \u2013 <span data-teams=\"true\">Working to shift perceptions and reduce judgment by both people working in the homelessness response sector and healthcare toward people with lived experiences of homelessness<\/span><\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li class=\"\" data-start=\"1652\" data-end=\"1811\">\n<p class=\"\" data-start=\"1654\" data-end=\"1811\"><strong style=\"color: var(--awb-color3);\" data-start=\"1654\" data-end=\"1690\">Team 2: Supporting the Workforce<\/strong> \u2013 Strengthening the professionals and frontline workers who provide vital support across the housing and health systems<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li class=\"\" data-start=\"1812\" data-end=\"1951\">\n<p class=\"\" data-start=\"1814\" data-end=\"1951\"><strong style=\"color: var(--awb-color3);\" data-start=\"1814\" data-end=\"1859\">Team 3: Advancing Patient-Centered Policy<\/strong> \u2013 Ensuring policies are informed by and responsive to the needs of those directly impacted<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/div><\/div><\/div><div class=\"fusion-layout-column fusion_builder_column fusion-builder-column-2 and identifying critical gaps. From this process emerged a series of <strong data-start=\"1804\" data-end=\"1829\">innovative prototypes<\/strong>\u2014early-stage solutions designed to address barriers to sustainable housing retention.<\/p>\n<p class=\"\" data-start=\"1706\" data-end=\"2002\"><span data-teams=\"true\"><strong>To test two of these prototypes<\/strong>, we partnered with students from UNB\u2019s <strong>Community and Population Health Nursing course<\/strong>. The course helps students learn the role of community nurses by placing them in real-world projects across New Brunswick. One student group\u2014<strong>Anayochukwu Njoku, Brooklyn Butt, Cassandra Cantwell, and Tobenna Onukwube<\/strong>\u2014worked on 2 prototypes developed by the teams, and this team was stewarded by one of the course professors, Dr. David Busolo. &nbsp;The student team tested:<\/span><\/p>\n<ol data-start=\"2128\" data-end=\"2389\">\n<li class=\"\" data-start=\"2128\" data-end=\"2253\">\n<p class=\"\" data-start=\"2131\" data-end=\"2253\"><strong style=\"color: var(--awb-color3);\" data-start=\"2131\" data-end=\"2174\">Reducing Stigma Among Service Providers<\/strong><span style=\"color: var(--awb-color3);\">:<\/span> How unconscious bias affects support for people facing housing instability.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li class=\"\" data-start=\"2254\" data-end=\"2389\">\n<p class=\"\" data-start=\"2257\" data-end=\"2389\"><strong style=\"color: var(--awb-color3);\" data-start=\"2257\" data-end=\"2306\">Mapping the Service Journey for Complex Cases<\/strong><span style=\"color: var(--awb-color3);\">:<\/span> How to improve collaboration between healthcare, justice, and community services.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p class=\"\" data-start=\"2391\" data-end=\"2619\"><strong data-start=\"2391\" data-end=\"2405\">On April 8<\/strong>, the students <a href=\"https:\/\/ponddeshpande.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/04\/PDC-clinical-poster-1-1.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">presented their findings<\/a> to their classmates and Challenge participants. They shared how the project changed their views and helped them reflect on their own biases. Their key takeaways included:<\/p>\n<ul data-start=\"2621\" data-end=\"2817\">\n<li class=\"\" data-start=\"2621\" data-end=\"2694\">\n<p class=\"\" data-start=\"2623\" data-end=\"2694\"><b>The overlapping challenges faced by people experiencing homelessness.<\/b><\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li class=\"\" data-start=\"2695\" data-end=\"2754\">\n<p class=\"\" data-start=\"2697\" data-end=\"2754\"><b>The harm caused by poor collaboration between services.<\/b><\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li class=\"\" data-start=\"2755\" data-end=\"2817\">\n<p class=\"\" data-start=\"2757\" data-end=\"2817\"><b>The systemic barriers that make long-term housing difficult.<\/b><\/p>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p class=\"\" data-start=\"3390\" data-end=\"3870\"><strong data-start=\"3390\" data-end=\"3412\">As we move forward<\/strong>, we extend heartfelt thanks to Professors <strong data-start=\"3455\" data-end=\"3471\">David Busolo<\/strong> et <strong data-start=\"3476\" data-end=\"3498\">Mary-Lee Gillis<\/strong>, the students, and all Challenge participants for their dedication and insight. The Health and Housing Resilience Challenge is now entering its <strong data-start=\"3643\" data-end=\"3663\">sustaining phase<\/strong>, with ongoing exploration of how these early innovations can evolve into actionable, human-centered solutions.<\/p>\n<p><strong data-start=\"3074\" data-end=\"3086\">Together<\/strong>, we\u2019re working toward a more compassionate, coordinated housing
