--fontsize: 22.6667; line-height: 1;\" data-fontsize=\"22.6667\" data-lineheight=\"22.6667px\">Challenges<\/h5>\n<p>For analyzing data grouped into categories of challenges, we applied the \u2018Gender as a Social Structure\u2019 framework (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.researchgate.net\/publication\/242107145_Gender_As_a_Social_Structure\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Risman, 2018<\/a>) to understand how challenges experienced at different levels \u2013 individual, interactional and systemic, or macro-level &#8211; interact as a system. According to Risman\u2019s framework, we grouped the challenges into two key categories of challenges: material and cultural.<\/p>\n<p>Material challenges are presented as a combination of access to funding, access to networking and appropriate training and programs, as well as operational challenges. Material challenges are influenced by cultural-level systems challenges related to organizational identity struggle, as well as gender-specific and intersectional barriers women and non-binary founders experience.<\/p>\n<p>The diagram below illustrates how both system-level material and cultural challenges intersect with and influence one another. <span style=\"background-color: var(--awb-bg-color-hover); color: var(--awb-text-color); font-style: var(--awb-text-font-style); font-weight: var(--awb-text-font-weight); text-align: var(--awb-content-alignment); text-transform: var(--awb-text-transform); font-size: 17.3333px;\"> Of the social enterprises participating in the research, half are at their \u2018emerging\u2019 stage and are less than 5 years old. Within the access to funding theme, the following sub-themes emerged:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Complexity of navigating the funding system: 50% of participants made a reference describing their difficulties navigating the funding landscape.<\/li>\n<li>Balancing privacy and visibility when applying for funding: Not all founders wanted to pursue \u2018target group\u2019 specific funding, e.g., \u201cLGBTQ2A+ specific funding\u201d especially within a close-knit context of Atlantic Canada, even though the founders may identify with the \u2018target group\u2019.<\/li>\n<li>\u2018Low trust in social enterprises\u2019 and \u2018mismatch between the need and the amount of funding available\u2019 was also noted.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"color: #ea0029;\">Operational challenges<\/span> are directly connected to funding challenges and include day-to-day costs such as utilities, space, as well as organizational demands for managing HR, legal and accounting aspects of running an organization. The theme was present among emerging social enterprises in their \u2018emerging\u2019 stage, as well as among more established nonprofits.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #ea0029;\">Access to networks<\/span> et <span style=\"color: #ea0029;\">access to relevant training and programs <\/span>are other sub-themes contributing to systems level material challenges. Social enterprise founders talked about difficulties finding professional networks in which they feel like they belong, as well as difficulties with finding trainings and programs that are relevant to their unique position in the marketplace, as well as their needs as women founders.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #ea0029;\">Cultural challenges<\/span> are comprised of \u2018organizational identity struggle\u2019 and \u2018gender-specific and intersectional challenges\u2019.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #ea0029;\">Organizational identity<\/span> struggle is an important theme under the systems level cultural challenges umbrella. We want to emphasize that \u2018struggle\u2019 is different from \u2018identity crisis\u2019. Social enterprises know who they are, but they collectively struggle with the question of where they belong. By trying to fit into one of the boxes, \u2018for-profit\u2019 or \u2018non-profit\u2019, they risk losing an important part of their identity as well as access to available resources, including funding.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #ea0029;\">Gender-specific and intersectional challenges<\/span> are comprised of cultural barriers women and non-binary founders experience at an individual and interactional level. Such barriers relate to internalized sexism and sexism experienced in their interactions with males in positions of influence and power, as well as racial bias experienced by founders who identify as Black, Asian, or Of Colour.<\/p>\n<p>Often women and non-binary founders begin their social enterprise journey as \u201clabour of love,\u201d motivated by their deep sense of responsibility and the desire to foster positive social change. Yet founders experience multiple responsibilities related to societal gender-based expectations and biases. Gender-specific challenges often coincide with racism and ageism, thus creating intersectional barriers. Under systemic pressures\u2014including funding gaps, cultural biases, and the over-extraction of their caring capacities\u2014this \u201clabour of love\u201d can become a \u201cburden of care,\u201d leading to burnout. The next set of data addresses the kinds of support founders have been able to leverage and what additional resources they need.<\/p>\n<p>Community building emerged as an important theme under both categories: support that social enterprise founders already received and found useful; and as the kind of support they seek and desire.<\/p>\n<\/div><div class=\"fusion-image-element\" style=\"--awb-caption-title-font-family:var(--h2_typography-font-family);--awb-caption-title-font-weight:var(--h2_typography-font-weight);--awb-caption-title-font-style:var(--h2_typography-font-style);--awb-caption-title-size:var(--h2_typography-font-size);--awb-caption-title-transform:var(--h2_typography-text-transform);--awb-caption-title-line-height:var(--h2_typography-line-height);--awb-caption-title-letter-spacing:var(--h2_typography-letter-spacing);\"><span class=\"fusion-imageframe imageframe-none imageframe-2 hover-type-none\"><img decoding=\"async\" width=\"1920\" height=\"1080\" title=\"Supports Blog2\" src=\"https:\/\/ponddeshpande.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/04\/Supports-Blog2.png\" alt class=\"img-responsive wp-image-5555\" srcset=\"https:\/\/ponddeshpande.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/04\/Supports-Blog2-200x113.png 200w, https:\/\/ponddeshpande.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/04\/Supports-Blog2-400x225.png 400w, https:\/\/ponddeshpande.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/04\/Supports-Blog2-600x338.png 600w, https:\/\/ponddeshpande.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/04\/Supports-Blog2-800x450.png 800w, https:\/\/ponddeshpande.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/04\/Supports-Blog2-1200x675.png 1200w, https:\/\/ponddeshpande.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/04\/Supports-Blog2.png 1920w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 1024px) 100vw, (max-width: 640px) 100vw, 1200px\" \/><\/span><\/div><div class=\"fusion-text fusion-text-5\"><p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>The need for a \u2018Community of Practice\u2019 for social entrepreneurs emerged as the founders discussed the importance of peer support, mentorship, appropriate programming and training, stand-alone workshops, and coaching.<\/p>\n<p>Below are paraphrased and summarized quotes from interviews with founders that further unpack what they mean by \u2018targeted support\u2019 for women and non-binary founders in social enterprise:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Coaching and mentorship from \u2018outside\u2019 experts, in some cases more formalized as a \u2018training program\u2019.<\/li>\n<li>Coaching and mentorship from peers in the SE sector, less formalized, and tailored to the needs of SE depending on their location on the SE spectrum and their maturity, e.g., \u2018emerging\u2019 or \u2018established\u2019.<\/li>\n<li>Easily available online tools and services to help access funding programs.<\/li>\n<li>Operational support \u2013 accessible accounting and legal services perhaps at a discounted rate for new and emerging SEs.<\/li>\n<li>Support with increasing SE presence on social media.<\/li>\n<li>Accessible targeted support for Francophone communities.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/div><div class=\"fusion-text fusion-text-6\"><p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"background-color: rgba(0, 0, 0, 0); font-size: 22.667px;\"><span style=\"color: #058189; font-family: Proxima Nova Extrabold;\">Next Steps<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p>To further refine these findings and shape potential recommendations, we invited research participants and partners to a \u201cdata party\u201d\u2014a collaborative data analysis session.
